Villarreal CF has unveiled its first official typeface, named 'grogueta', designed by 23-year-old season ticket holder Xavi Rubert. The new font, inspired by the 'V' from the yellow shield, already features on the team's UEFA Champions League 2026/27 jerseys and will be progressively rolled out across the club's entire visual identity.

Xavi Rubert is a Vila-real native, a Villarreal fan since childhood and a Graphic Design graduate. He completed his curricular internship in the club's Design Department, where he studied the corporate culture and visual identity that later informed his project. "The passion that began with a grandfather who was a season ticket holder in 1959 has become, more than six decades later, a typeface worn by Villarreal players in the Champions League," Rubert explained.

A family legacy

The creation of 'grogueta' is deeply connected to its designer's family history. His maternal grandfather, Tomás Albiol, was a Villarreal CF season ticket holder from 1959 to 2018, a bond spanning nearly six decades during which he saw the club rise from regional categories to the elite of Spanish and European football. Rubert has channelled that transmission of passion into a typeface that aims for modernity without losing the grogueta essence.

The club's stated goal is to strengthen its corporate image and contribute to a distinctive, genuinely yellow identity. The rollout began on kit for the top continental competition and will extend to all of Villarreal's physical and digital platforms.

This launch comes at a time of intense activity for the first team, who sit 11th in La Liga with 8 points after eight matchdays. Their next fixture is at home against Elche this Saturday, a rival currently in 18th place in the table. The squad arrives in good spirits following a 3-1 win over Napoli in the Champions League last week, though in the league their last five results show three wins and two defeats.

'Grogueta' thus becomes a new visual symbol for a club that, from 11th place, is looking to consolidate its performance in the 2026/27 season.
