Draw against Atlético
Villarreal CF, managed by Íñigo Pérez, faced Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano and finished 2-2. Pubill scored the opening goal, followed by two penalties from Gerard Moreno and Mikautadze that gave them the lead. However, the team lost control after Le Normand’s dismissal, and coach Simeone netted the goal that sealed the final draw.
Tie at El Sardinero
The second fixture, at El Sardinero against Racing Santander, also ended 2-2. Villarreal failed to overcome the rivalry in its own stadium, leaving the team with just two points after the first two matches.
History of the opening games
With these two draws, Villarreal matches its worst start in the last decade. In the 2021-22 season, the club also finished with two draws in the first two matches, against Granada (0-0) at home and Espanyol (0-0) in Cornellà. Since then, the club has managed to win at least one of the first two matches each campaign, and in 2022-23 and 2025-26 it achieved full victories in both games.
The current result reflects a disappointing start, but Villarreal still has the opportunity to improve in the upcoming La Liga fixtures.
